Welcome Back

Welcome back to another school year. Last year I choose the word "inspired" to guide me through my year and I was indeed inspired by new relationships, new places and the world of ART!! This year I'm choosing the word, "creativity" to guide me through my year because I believe our most important metal talent is the ability to imagine what has never existed. Please share a word or two that will guide you through your year.

Provincial Art Exhibition Conclusion

On May 24, 2012, principals, teachers, professional artists and citizens from across the province attended our opening reception. Sixty-two paintings were exhibited in company with narratives, which expressed the importance of the arts in our lives. Paintings were created on a 24x24” surface and ranged from portraits to abstracts and from landscapes to fantasy. The quality of paintings was impressive especially considering our youngest artists where only 12 years old. A published book was gifted to each participating member. Books contained artist’s artworks and narratives, wherein participants described themselves, their artworks and How the Arts Impact their Lives, in 150 words or less.

The benefits of this event surpassed my expectations. Participant’s artworks and words revealed the arts feed our imagination, they help us develop a sense of beauty and they provide unique ways for us to gain insights into ourselves and into the world. Additionally, the event concluded with the sale of 27 paintings, which raised enough money to send four sick children to Disneyland for the day. Involvement in and with art exhibitions provides people with opportunities for self-expression and creativity and thus, has the power to influence who we are individually and collectively.

Many thanks to everyone who supported our event. Stay tuned for details for our next Arts Advocacy Venture!

The Arts Touring Alliance

The Arts Touring Alliance is a province service organization that promotes arts touring in Alberta. We have two components that could help you find artists for your school.
 1.    Young Audience Directory – this directory contains contact information for performing artists and residency artists.  This is a free service.
2.    Anglo Franco – this is a showcase of performing artists who perform in both english and french who will be touring to Alberta schools next year. This is for those looking primarily for performances although some of the artists do have residency programs. See 10 artists LIVE to see if they are a good fit for your school.  This showcase is on the afternoon of April 20th in Edmonton, just prior to the Alberta School Council Association’s provincial conference. If you are sending a parent to this conference, you might also want to consider sending them to the Showcase. Cost is $50.  For more on the above information go to

Contest for Young Canadian Artists

Contest for young Canadian artists

The National Gallery of Canada recently launched the second edition of So You Want To Be an Artist?  -- a nation-wide contest for young Canadian artists between the ages of 16 and 19.

Our goal is to engage with youth from every region of the country, get them to make art about an issue of importance to them, and to share their creativity. We are encouraging contestants to submit their original artwork to makeart.gallery.ca by March 18, 2012.

All accepted entries will be showcased online between March 26 and April 30 where the public can vote for their favourite artworks by using the Facebook “Like” button.

The 12 works with the most votes will be displayed at the National Gallery of Canada for a month where they will be judged by our jury of experts. The top three artists whose entries are selected will receive outstanding prizes, and the grand prize winner will enjoy a behind-the-scenes visit with NCG experts.

This year’s jury members are:

Sonny Assu, interdisciplinary artist from Vancouver and Montreal

Jonathan Cruz, illustrator and graphic designer from Iqaluit

Claude Deschênes, Radio-Canada arts reporter

Kim Morgan, artist and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) assistant professor

Peter Simpson, Ottawa Citizen's Arts-editor-at-large

In 2011, the first edition of the contest attracted over 120 participants, 20,000 votes and some 50,000 online visitors.

If you'd like more information about the contest please feel free to contact us at contest@gallery.ca
